5 Steps To Ensure Your Students And Staff Are Safe And Secure In A Crisis

Blog

Today's schools are constantly faced with one threat and crisis after another: natural disasters, bullying, drugs, violence, crime, and terrorism. With so many threats, it is important that you ensure that your school is prepared to tackle whatever comes its way. You want to make sure that your students as well as your staff are safe and secure when the time comes. So, the question you must answer is: is your school prepared? Here are five steps to help ensure that the answer to that question is yes:

Step #1: Look Around for Any Security and Safety Improvements That Can Be Made.

The first thing that you want to do is survey the entire school grounds for any improvements that can be made in regards to security. This should include everything from security cameras and fences to emergency power and lighting. When taking a look at your security cameras, make sure that you have all those nooks and crannies covered so that not an inch of the school grounds goes uncovered and/or uncaptured.

Step #2: Form an Emergency Team.

When an emergency erupts throughout the school, it is important that everyone responds promptly. It is a good idea to have a special group of staff that is deemed the "emergency security team". Each member needs to have a specific role that they perform during an emergency.

Step #3: Create a Communication System.

Things can get crazy and out of control during an emergency and it can be difficult, if not impossible, to communicate with one another. Since communication is crucial during a crisis situation, it is important to have a plan for communication between staff members, particularly the emergency security team. Make sure that the team has access to two-way radios.

Step #4: Define and Practice a Crisis Management Plan.

With the rest of your security team, create a crisis management policy and practice emergency procedures on a regular basis. In addition, it is important that you define acceptable and non-acceptable behaviors for the school. Your staff members should be trained on how to neutralize potentially violent situations and parents should always be encouraged to participate with their children at school functions and at home.

Step #5: Work on Improving Student Relationships.

It is always better to prevent a crisis than to try to stop one while it is happening. The best way to prevent drugs, violence, bullying, teen pregnancies, etc. is to get ahead of the problem by getting to know your students and showing them that you actually care. Otherwise, students feel that you don't care and that they're invisible, which leads to them to taking action to getting your attention, even if it is negative attention. By taking time to get to know your students and care about them and their future, you will see a huge improvement in their behavior, which will allow some of their other problems to simply fade into the darkness.
